When you think of retirement, what do you think of?
Is it dollars and cents?
Is it travel? Or time freedom? Some other bucket list item?
Maybe you feel insecure. How will you afford your life? What if your money runs out? What will you do with your time? What will it be like to not work? Will you feel lonely?
Like most retirees, you may end up wanting to check the box that says: It’s complicated.
Luckily, your retirement does not have to feel so uncoordinated, disorganized, and stressful.
In fact, I believe you can flourish.
What do I mean by ‘flourish’?
Well, I took the word from Martin Seligman’s book of the same title. Seligman, the father of positive psychology, broadened the field from a science of happiness, focused on positive emotion, to well-being, including important matters like meaning and accomplishment.
Similarly, I think retirement planning must broaden from a science of money to a science of financial well-being.
Financial well-being goes beyond dollars and cents, our balance sheet, investment statement, income, and expenses, to how money supports our health, daily joys, aspirations, family, community, and a sense of purpose.
In other words, there is financial security, having enough money to support your retirement, and there is flourishing in retirement.
